PennBarry Announces the Addition of QR Code Fan Labels

PennBarry announces the addition of QR Code labels on all fans that will provide instant access to Operation and Maintenance Manuals from your smartphone or mobile tablet. p>

The QR Code fan label allows anyone who needs information about the installation, operation, or maintenance to access the latest Operation and Maintenance Manual online from any mobile device with a QR code reader such as ExecTag or Microsoft Tag reader.

“Operation and Maintenance Manuals often disappear shortly after the fan is unpacked,” says Jenny Abney Sivie, Vice President of PennBarry. “With the QR label, anyone with a smartphone or tablet can scan the tag to open the Operation and Maintenance Manuals for that fan right there when it's needed, even on the roof. Building facility personnel can pull up the fan Operation and Maintenance Manual years after installation, just by scanning the QR tag on their fan.”

ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Addendum u with Fan Efficiency Grade Requirements out for Advisory Public Review

ASHRAE 90.1-2010 has added fan efficiency grade (FEG) requirements to the standard. The changes are in Addendum u and are currently in advisory public review. The addendum updates section 6.5.3.1 from Fan System Power Limitation to Fan System Power and Efficiency. It calls for fans with a brake horsepower of 5 hp or more to have a fan efficiency grade of 67 or higher. Fans that are part of equipment that is already covered in the minimum efficiency tables in ASHRAE 90.1 are currently excluded from the requirement.

You can review the Addendum at here. ASHRAE is looking for comments on the changes through July 25, 2011.

UL Smoke Control Rating on VCR

We have recently received our official UL Smoke Control approval for the VCR – Free Standing Centrifugal fan. The requirements to pass the UL Smoke Control testing are for the fan to test at 500F for 4 hours and 1000F for 15 minutes. The VCR fan exceeded the standard test requirements and ran for 1 hour at the 1000 degrees F test temperature. To the best of our knowledge and research, this leads the industry and follows on the industry leading ratings we have already released on the following UL Smoke control rated products:

Dynamo – 500F 4 Hours, 1000F for 41 Minutes
Fumex – 500F for 4 Hours, 1000F for 1 Hour
ESI – 500F for 4 Hours, 1000F for 1 Hour

ACES Bill Passes the House

Late last Friday, the American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009 (ACES), also known as the Waxman-Markey bill or the Cap and Trade, passed in the House with a 219 to 212 vote. Most people are aware of the cap and trade sections of the bill, but the ACES bill also addresses commercial building energy efficiency and energy renovations. If passed by the Senate, the bill will affect all of us in the building industry.

The ACES bill states that the "national average percentage improvement of a building's energy performance" for most new commercial buildings would be immediately reduced to 30% below ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007. In 2014, it would be reduced to 50% below ASHRAE 90.1. Then, starting in 2018 and going through 2030, additional reductions of 5% below ASHRAE 90.1 would take effect every three years.

The bill also provides for support of an awards structure for owners conducting effective retrofits. It provides funding up to $500 toward an energy audit prescribing improvements resulting in at least a 20% efficiency improvement and additional awards based on square footage and energy reduction amount as follows:

• $0.15/sq ft of retrofit area for demonstrated energy use reductions from 20% to 30%
• $0.75/sq ft for demonstrated energy use reductions from 30% to 40%
• $1.60/sq ft for demonstrated energy use reductions from 40% to 50%
• $2.50/sq ft for demonstrated energy use reductions exceeding 50%

The Senate vote is expected to be in October. It will be interesting to see how the Senate votes and how that will effect the new construction and retrofit markets.

PennBarry Joins the U.S. Green Building Council

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit composed of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.

Fans in the HVAC system are key components of most mechanical systems, and major users of energy. PennBarry is committed to help the industry improve the efficiency of fans and reduce their energy consumption in buildings to achieve net-zero by 2030.

As a member company, PennBarry will be able to serve on a LEED or USGBC committee and help shape the future of LEED and green building. Company members also vote for the Board of Directors and participate in ballots of the LEED Rating System.
